CIVIL CONVERSATIONS : NICODEMUS, KANSAS

This documentary was created in partnership with High Country News and tells the story of Nicodemus, Kansas. Founded in 1877, it is the only black American, post-Civil War town still in existence in the West.

FLUME FEVER

Best Documentary, Best Cinematography, Best Overall - Paonia Film Festival 2013: This short documentary was produced for the Interpretative Association of Western Colorado to capture the reconstruction of the historic Hanging Flume in southwest Colorado.

WATER IN THE DESERT

This documentary was produced in partnership with Colorado Mesa University. Throughout the West water is a precious resource. This documentary explores the community's relationship to its water resources through the history of water development, current usage and future challenges.

3. About the Filmmaker

Mara Ferris is the founder and owner of Gen9 Productions, a production company based out of Grand Junction, Colorado. Her passion for filmmaking stems from the belief that the art of visual storytelling has the power to connect an audience to its content in such a way as to be an invaluable resource in engaging inspiration, awareness and curiosity and has the potential to leverage change. 

She has over 15 years of professional experience and has produced award winning video productions. Working with nonprofit organizations, private foundations, museums, universities and government agencies, she has had the opportunity to bring many unique and compelling stories to life through video. Her work has taken her into a diverse range of environments - from filming Rural Trauma Team Scenarios in West Virginia, to remote historical reconstruction and archaeological projects in the desert southwest, and adventures on the high plains of Kansas.
